![]() ![]() The solo campaign is arguably the least compelling part of the entire package. The history of this city is fascinating, yet it’s hidden away in artefact descriptions and rarely excels outside of them. It’s sad that dialogue feels so inconsequential. Citizens can provide you with side quests, but these are painfully boring, crippled by the same lacklustre writing weighing down the main campaign. You can easily lose hours finding all the hidden relics, crypts and tombs scattered about the place. Some are hidden away in and around Paititi, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t seek them out.Įidos Montreal made a point of emphasising the sheer size of Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s hub world prior to release, and it was worthwhile to do so. Every single one is polished to perfection, idyllically placed when encountered throughout the story. ![]() Tomb designs can range from a crumbling Spanish Galleon amidst the boundaries of a cliff to a mixture of labyrinthian waterways that will enrapture you in seconds. Hugely expanded from previous games, they now feel like levels within themselves as you can spend upwards of 30 minutes trying to solve a fiendishly crafted puzzle. Stumbling across hidden crypts (essentially miniature tombs) to find a useful upgrade and a few tidbits of lore is an engaging treat, developing the game’s world in ways I didn’t expect.Ĭhallenge Tombs are the real highlight. ![]() There’s a comedic element to Lara Croft digging through primitive huts like a student on her gap year, but it’s also where the greatest part of Shadow rears its head: exploration. You’ll receive questionable glances while exploring, whether peering through an empty household or discovering ruins that have remained untouched for decades. Lara is a stranger in a strange land, and its occupants react accordingly. It’s cleverly designed and bustling with life as citizens go about their daily routines. Discovered in the opening hours, this ancient abode is positively huge, acting as the main hub area you’ll return to again and again as the story progresses. It feels like Eidos Montreal wasn’t sure how to conclude this trilogy, resulting in a cavalcade of hollow yet lavishly produced cutscenes that take you from one set-piece to the next - all of which are, fortunately, an absolute joy to experience.Īside from a few bespoke locations, the majority of your time will be spent in the Hidden City of Paititi. It should have been the main focus, but instead finds itself on the sidelines as multiple, far less intriguing arcs are given prominence. It’s filled with history and a genuine care that shines through until the end. The relationship between Lara and Jonah is a brilliant one. Jonah’s shoulder is the only one left to lean on, a close friend of Lara whose relationship is a pleasure to bear witness to. This immediately becomes clear as a rapturous tsunami tears through Mexico, killing thousands and leaving our heroine a battered, broken mess. Upon stealing an ancient dagger, Lara is warned by her enemies of the cataclysm she’s set in motion. Shadow of the Tomb Raider begins with the literal apocalypse. Lara spends time either talking about her dead parents, realising her own misguided intentions or fending off Trinity, an evil organisation whose motivations are muddy and inconsistent. Things wrap up in a hugely anticlimactic final act that fails to deliver thanks to a clumsy narrative which juggles far too many elements when none of them have enough depth. Yes, Rise of the Tomb Raider could feel generic but it still managed to weave an excellent yarn regardless. Arcs are established without ever being paid off in a meaningful way, or otherwise prance around in limbo without being touched for hours. Troubled pacing and an odd mixture of performances kept me from getting truly invested, and the absence of Rhianna Pratchett’s writing talent is most definitely felt. ![]() That isn’t to say it’s bad, it’s consistently great, but it ends up sitting in the shadows of its contemporaries. Whether it’s narrative, combat or exploration, very little in Shadow of the Tomb Raider feels as good as I’d like. It’s simultaneously the most accomplished chapter thus far, but also continually trips up under the weight of its own ambition. The closing chapter of Lara Croft’s reboot trilogy is a complicated one. ![]()

![]() ![]() During the Milton Keynes concerts, Armstrong runs the gamut from pretending to pleasure himself to delivering a political rant. These are the same three guys as always - the same tats, the same stylishly punk rock rags, the same Clash haircuts, the same irreverent attitudes. Over halfway into their second, Bullet in a Bible proves that Green Day will be forever remembered for their own identity. In their first decade, Green Day’s greatest accomplishment was to bring punk music to a new audience. Armstrong and Dirnt reflect on the motivations behind it - a desire to try something new, reach a new height of expression, and as Dirnt says, “step out of Dookie‘s shadow”. Cool recalls in the Bullet in a Bible video how the band’s approach to American Idiot had a “Let’s take on the planet” vibe. Political and social reactions to a post-9/11 America fueled the record, but did not overpower it - listening is as fun as it is challenging. “Hear the dogs howling out of key / To a hymn called ‘Faith and Misery’ (Hey!) / And bleed, the company lost the war today”, sings Armstrong in “Holiday”. It was not only more musically ambitious and complex than anything they had done, but also more intelligent. In 2004, American Idiot became Green Day’s most celebrated work yet. The next peak came in 1997 with “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”, a ballad immortalized (at least in the U.S.) by its prominent appearance in the final episode of Seinfeld. Thanks in part to a record deal with Reprise, the album catapulted Green Day beyond their San Francisco Bay Area origins and into international notoriety. Anyone with a passing interest in punk rock of the last 15 years has heard, and likely enjoyed this 1994 release. Dookie, Green Day’s third record, needs no introduction. The band’s 16-year run has had its ups and downs, but the ups always stuck and the downs never fell too far. Bullet commemorates this success while creating a moment all its own. Their last studio effort, 2004’s American Idiot, was a grab for greatness, a punk rock opera with lofty aspirations and richer rewards - a Grammy for Best Rock Album and sales over nine million. It’s incredible to think how far they’ve come from their roots as silly street punks with three chords and a Clash record. Playing for 130,000 people over two days, Green Day have performed what must be the largest punk rock gig in history. Recorded at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes, England, in June 2005, the Bullet in a Bible CD/DVD captures Green Day at an astounding height in their career. Superimposed at his side, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool hover above a crowd of thousands as if messiahs over water. ![]() ![]() On the back cover, an image of a larger-than-life Armstrong, dwarfing the festival stage behind him, pointing to the sky like Pete Townshend. A silhouette of lead singer and guitarist Billy Joe Armstrong poses before an arena audience that seems to extend into infinity. At first sight of the cover, it’s evident Bullet in a Bible is a new kind of Green Day album. ![]() ![]() Please include your ip address, the time you received this message and what you were doing at the time. All the little flavor text additions, cool spells, references, characters and items, etc. I could probably do an entire piece just going over the “story” of this set and how they’ve incorporated some awesome D&D flavor within Magic’s existing mechanics and rules. You Meet in a Tavern is particular fun to me, flavor-wise at least. This is the kind of thing that makes me want to create a whole D&D-meets-Magic format for me and my friends. Black is the only color that isn’t graced with this fun Dungeon Master-esque addition, which I am incredibly disappointed by, but I’m excited enough about Forgotten Realms in its entirety to let it slide just this once. The next thing I want to call out is the “choose one” instants. Oh, and some creatures (like Baleful Beholder) even have a “choose one” effect where you get to basically cast a famous D&D spell. From the simplistic Fly to the “this is going to cause problems” Wish, I’m definitely going to be making more than one deck themed around my favorite spellcasting characters. One thing I particularly enjoy is the various D&D spells peppered throughout the set with some pretty cool and well-executed effects. Obviously we have the beautifully-illustrated Potion of Healing, the tricky Mimic, and the somewhat charming, over-the-top, swaggering likes of Volo, Guide to Monsters, among many others. I was excited to see references to Neverwinter Nights (I got irrationally giddy when I saw that one of the Swamps mentioned the Mere of Dead Men) and Baldur’s Gate (another Swamp card) along with the classic tabletop stuff. There’s plenty of iconic items, characters, and scenarios from D&D sprinkled throughout Forgotten Realms’ cards. And I, for one, think they did a great job. I’ll get to how they incorporated some of D&D’s mechanics in a bit, but for now it’s all about the flavor. I know I already mentioned that Wizards nixed Forgotten Realms’ inclusion as part of Magic’s canon lore, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still marvel at how R&D has sprinkled the magic of D&D in this set. My favorite is the Far Realm, a plane of Lovecraftian horrors (called aberrations in D&D) that lies “outside” of the rest of the multiverse.įorgotten Realms has focused on Faerûn and the Prime as they’re the biggest part of D&D and probably the most well-known and commonly referenced, though there are some splashes from other planes as well. It’s where the fey are from and is a plane of really potent magic. There’s also the Feywild or the plane of Faerie, which exists as an echo of the Prime Material Plane. Just like Magic, the Forgotten Realms has more than one realm as the name implies (usually called “ planes”), which is also called the multiverse. Some other notable places in Faerûn are the Anauroch desert, Amn, and Thay. A lot of lore focuses on the Sword Coast and heroes of the area including the Spine of the World to the North and Baldur’s Gate further South. The main location for a lot of Forgotten Realms stories is Faerûn, a major continent on the planet of Toril. Let me just crack my knuckles and lore vomit all over you before we get into the set itself. Hired Hexblade | Illustration by Irina Nordsol And honestly comes off as a little bit lazy in terms of creative storytelling, but it is what it is. Well, we already know that this set isn’t going to be part of Magic’s Multiverse lore-wise. So what does this mean for Forgotten Realms? They simply print cards with mechanics and themes to bolster upcoming blocks or give answers for overpowered cards from recent sets. Cards in core sets also sometimes have reminder text for mechanics and abilities on the card itself.Ĭore sets also don’t contribute to Magic’s overall storyline and don’t usually have a unified story across their cards. Core sets are usually aimed towards new players, featuring cards and mechanics that can easily be added into various MTG products like welcome decks, planeswalker decks, and deck builder’s toolkits. This means that it’s going to be Standard-legal, of course, but it’s also got some interesting implications. This year, however, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms has replaced a normal core set. If you’re familiar with Magic’s typical releases, you’ll know that the summer set is usually the year’s core set. This set is an interesting one, and not just because of the lore and flavor.
